Class of 2018 Commencement Highlights

LCC held its 62nd annual Commencement on Saturday evening, May 12, in the Msgr. Herr Gymnasium. The seventy-five graduates and their guests were addressed by Salutatorian Sam DeLong in an address entitled “296940” which refers to the total minutes logged in high school and all the special times he’s shared with the Class of 2018; he ended with some advice about future time in their lives. Valedictorian Emily Sreenan gave her valedictory address entitled “Inspiration in Our Shoes” in which she talked about how this book inspired her running (she’s a state champion in cross-country) and how lessons learned in running a race can also be good life lessons.

One hundred percent of the Class of 2018 passed the requirements for graduation and participated in the ceremony. Eighty percent of the 75 graduates will continue their education at a 4-year institution, 8% are going to a 2-year college, 9% intend to join the military and 3% plan to enter the workforce.

The faculty and staff of LCC annually recognize graduating seniors who have excelled in the various disciplines over four years. The winners of the 2018 departmental awards were Leyre Jimenez Garcia (Math), Chun-Yen (Jim) Cheng (Science), Emily Sreenan (English), Ryan Stemen (Social Studies), Samuel DeLong (French), Cecilia Riepenhoff (Italian), Ethan Mangette (Spanish), Mark Janowski (Business), Logan Shultz (Technology), Ellen Dee (Art), Zerlina Keys (Choir), Jonathan Garlock (Instrumental Music).

In addition to the academic awards, Emily Sreenan and Connor Knippen were presented with the prestigious Bishop’s Cross Award. The Bishop’s Cross is a great honor given to graduating seniors in the Toledo Diocese who lead by example, are active in the pastoral life of their school and parishes, and are known for being persons of excellent character, integrity and service.

Madelyn John was announced the winner of the Catherine G. Quatman Student Award and Deacon Patrick Minnich was named the Catherine G. Quatman Faculty Award recipient in recognition of their passion for the mission of Lima Central Catholic and the Lima Community.

Msgr. Herr Scholarships were awarded to Cecilia Riepenhoff and Nelson Denson. These scholarships are given every year as a testament to the faith Fr. Herr had in the youth of today.
